Job Title: Communications Coordinator for Politics Grade: MGT D Salary starts at $94,601 per year

Location: Washington, DC or Remote





This position will help to coordinate and develop political communications materials through digital and traditional channels. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Communications for Politics, this role will promote the union's mission through political work, develop strategy, create media pitches, execute digital campaigns, among other activities.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Perform a wide range of duties as assigned by the International Union, including, but not limited to the following:


  • Assists in developing, implementing, and updating communications strategies and calendars for various campaigns within the union.
  • Develops pitch ideas for earned media placement based on political campaigns.
  • Writes and develops op-eds, background pieces, fact sheets, press kit materials, leaflets, brochures, and other materials as needed for various campaigns.
  • Helps draft the development of a national political digital strategy.
  • Works directly with political and communication staff to create and share digital content, drive online engagement of workers and other stakeholders, and build online recruiting and engagement tools for political campaigns.
  • Leads the development of content and content planning, and maintain campaign digital assets, such as websites, social media, SMS, and other properties.
  • Writes talking points, statements, and letters to the editor, and other written materials as needed.
  • Assists in the production of videos. Trains members to speak on camera.
  • Drafts content and strategy for digital and traditional communication channels.
  • Provides data analysis from analytic findings on communication campaigns.
  • Researches and evaluates various technologies as needed to assist political organizers, communicators, and other SEIU staff and leaders on the most effective use of technology to further our mission.
  • Supervises political communications team members (including term staff).
  • Performs other duties as required to assist the International Union.


Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in communications-related field preferred. Five or more years of experience in communications or related work required or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:


  • Experience developing and implementing strategy on a wide range of campaigns, including organizing, elections, political, and legislative, as well as experience working with community allies.
  • Thorough knowledge of media relations strategies.
  • Direct management experience of digital campaign execution and measurement.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to continuously develop knowledge and skills related to use of rapidly changing technology.
  • Knowledge of unions or other advocacy organizations.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and basic HTML languages.
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus.



Physical Requirements:

Work is generally performed in an office setting, but job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays. Long and irregular hours.
