Communications

The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew's reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for Pew, the Senior Director, Digital & Creative will lead the teams that support the creation of Pew's external communications through creative, multimedia, and digital initiatives and channels. Through management of three core teams that include approximately 40 full-time staff members, this leader will collaborate across the organization to ensure creative, timely, and high-quality content and dissemination strategies. The position is eligible for up to 60% telework.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the multi-faceted work of the digital and creative teams, including multimedia, web production, digital strategy, design, and project management, to ensure comprehensive, effective, and creative strategies for Pew's research and advocacy materials.
  • Collaborate effectively across the organization, regularly engaging with senior leaders across Pew to discuss strategies and tactics. Within Communications, serve as a member of the leadership team that regularly assesses department goals and progress against goals to help staff members feel engaged and successful.
  • Develop new products and recommend investments in new technologies to keep Pew up to date in a rapidly evolving space. Recommend new approaches, tools, and partnerships.
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor digital and creative staff. Offer opportunities for skill development and growth, and provide regular feedback about progress toward individual goals. Foster a culture focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as one that recognizes and rewards creativity and collaboration.
  • Ensure a data-driven culture as part of the Communications team, regularly assessing and reporting on key deliverables and metrics through digital analytics and other methods.
  • Manage external vendors, as needed, including for major digital investments and support functions, such as the website.
  • Oversee the work of the project management team, which helps ensure the efficient workflow of all external communications materials produced by the organization.



Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field required.
  • A minimum of 15 years of increasingly responsible digital and management experience in the for-profit or non-profit sector.
  • A minimum of eight years of previous direct supervisory experience required including experience managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, creative, and assume accountability for all areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated record of success working collaboratively with customers, clients, and senior leaders in a high pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the latest digital trends with the understanding of how they could apply to Pew's strategic goals.
  • Ability to think strategically, execute against multiple priorities, manage time effectively, and identify resources for projects.
  • A well-organized, task-oriented style, with a focus on collaboratively achieving clear and ambitious goals.
  • Proven project management skills, preferably in the context of website design or redesign involving decisions around success criteria, goals, scope, and budget.
  • Ability to manage short- and long-term projects in line with program priorities and institutional procedures.
  • Experience with social networking platforms, online community engagement strategies, e-mail marketing strategies, and digital analytics is required.
  • Experience with podcasts, video, and interactives preferred.
  • Familiarity with content management, email marketing, customer relationship management, and data asset management systems a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and manage productive relationships with campaign managers, consultants, and others involved in developing or implementing the communication efforts of Pew.
  • Excellent listening skills and skills of diplomacy. Ability to work productively with a wide array of different people throughout the institution.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills to effectively communicate within and outside the organization.
